United Way’s fitUnited and partners present second annual Day of Action
PITTSBURGH, PA (May 5, 2016)— United Way of Southwestern PA’s fitUnited, in partnership with Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R) and The Pittsburgh Project, will host its second annual Day of Action. On June 11, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., hundreds of community volunteers will be challenged to restore Fowler Park and Playground in the North Side.
“It is our job to bring our community, including corporate leaders, local sports teams, organizations, young professionals, families, students and more, together to put plans into action for the betterment of the community,” said Christine Grady, United Way’s fitUnited program director. “We are thrilled to be able to provide a safe, fun place for North Side families to enjoy after Day of Action.”
Fowler Park and Playground, currently operated by The Pittsburgh Project, is located in the North Side on North Charles Street. Nearly 3,000 children and families use the park each year. At this year’s Day of Action, volunteers are needed for a variety of projects including, planting flowers, repairing playground equipment, performing yardwork, painting, and more.
“Our hope is that more people in the community will be able to take advantage of this beautiful park once the repairs and improvements are made during Day of Action,” said William Thompkins, ED, The Pittsburgh Project. “We are pleased to be part of this project and look forward to partnering with United Way and P3R.”
During last year’s Day of Action, nearly 200 volunteers worked to improve Willie Stargell Field in Homewood. After 550 hours of volunteer work, more than 300 Homewood children are able to enjoy the newly restored field. With the completion of this year’s project, North Side families will have a safe, clean place to join together as a community.
Volunteers, including groups, teams, families and individuals, are still needed to take on a variety of projects for Day of Action. To learn more and register, visit http://bit.ly/uwdayofaction16.
